Organizer of the “Smart Senior Consortium”, with the participation of 38 enterprises from Japan and the USA
I wrote a paper titled as “Smart Seniors Are Leading the Senior Market of 21st Century” for the Japan Research Review that was published in September, 1999, by the Japan Research Institute, Ltd. where I was working at the time. In this paper, I described strategies for cultivating the active senior market based on my concept of the Smart Senior.
Smart Seniors Are Leading the Senior Market of 21st Century.
(Japan Research Review, Sep. 1999)
To implement these strategies, I organized the Smart Senior Consortium with the participation of 38 enterprises from different industries in Japan and the USA. The following is the list of the Japan-based participants in the alphabetical order.
AD DENTSU Tokyo INC.
Chuo Trust & Banking Co., Ltd
Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.
Hayashikane Sangyo Co., Ltd
Home Computing Network INC.
Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO)
Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd.
Nihon Unisys, Ltd.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT)
Osaka Gas Co., Ltd
RICOH Company, Ltd
Royal Hotel Co., Ltd
SANYO Electric Co., Ltd.
Shiseido Co., Ltd.
Sumitomo Life Insurance Company
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)
Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd
Zurich Life Insurance Company Ltd.
The number of participants and the extensive range of industries indicate that this concept drew great attention from the business enterprises. The media kept watch on this movement as well. I was frequently interviewed at the time, as the consortium was covered in many newspapers and magazines.
Unfortunately, the consortium did not reach the level to produce any particular businesses, as a consequence of the collapse of the “dot-com bubble” in 1999 - 2000. Even so, this consortium had a strong impact on the society at the time. It contributed to increasing public recognition of and attention to the active senior market.
